Overview

The 7-day Mount Elgon Hiking and Kidepo Valley National Park safari is a unique adventure that combines highland trekking with classic savannah wildlife experiences in some of Uganda’s most remote and spectacular regions. This itinerary is designed for travelers seeking both physical challenge and immersive wildlife encounters, offering a balanced mix of mountain exploration, scenic road journeys, and game viewing.

The safari begins with travel to Mount Elgon National Park, where hikers trek through lush montane forests, bamboo zones, and afro-alpine landscapes en route to Wagagai Peak (4,321 m), the highest point in eastern Uganda. The hike is less technical than other African mountains but incredibly scenic, featuring waterfalls, caves, and distinctive vegetation. The gradual ascent allows for acclimatization while rewarding hikers with sweeping views from the summit.

After the Mount Elgon experience, the journey continues north to the remote wilderness of Kidepo Valley National Park, widely regarded as one of Africa’s most beautiful and untouched savannah parks. Here, travelers enjoy game drives across vast plains backed by rugged mountain ranges, with opportunities to see elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, lions, and a variety of antelope species. The park’s isolation enhances the sense of exclusivity and adventure.

The safari concludes with a stop at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, where guests participate in guided rhino tracking on foot, completing the “Big Five” experience in Uganda. Depending on your arrival time, you may relax after your international flight or enjoy a short city or lakeside walk. A briefing about the upcoming Mount Elgon hike and Kidepo Valley safari is provided, including gear checks and an overview of the journey ahead. Dinner and overnight are at your hotel.

Day 02 Transfer from Entebbe to Mount Elgon National Park

After an early breakfast, you depart Entebbe and drive eastward toward Mount Elgon National Park. The journey takes you through Uganda’s lush countryside, passing sugar plantations, traditional villages, and scenic landscapes. En route, there are stops for lunch and refreshments. As you approach Mbale, the massive slopes of Mount Elgon dominate the skyline. Arrival is in the late afternoon or evening, followed by dinner and overnight at a lodge near the park, allowing time to rest before the hike.

Day 03 Start the Hike from the Budadiri Starting Point

Following breakfast, you transfer to Budadiri, the trailhead for the Mount Elgon trek. After registration with Uganda Wildlife Authority and a briefing by park rangers and guides, the hike begins. The trail ascends gently through cultivated land before entering montane forest filled with bamboo, waterfalls, and diverse birdlife. The pace is steady to allow acclimatization, and the trail offers beautiful views of the surrounding valleys. After several hours of hiking, you arrive at the first mountain camp, where you settle in for dinner and overnight in a cool, tranquil environment.

Day 04 Hike to Wagagai Peak (4,321 m) and Drive to Kidepo Valley National Park

An early start is required for the summit attempt. The hike continues through afro-alpine vegetation, characterized by giant lobelias and groundsels, as the trail climbs toward Wagagai Peak, the highest point on Mount Elgon and in eastern Uganda. From the summit, you enjoy panoramic views across Uganda and into Kenya on a clear day. After descending back to the trailhead, you begin a long but scenic drive north toward Kidepo Valley National Park. The journey passes through remote and less-traveled regions of Uganda, offering insight into the country’s cultural and geographical diversity. Arrival in Kidepo is late evening, followed by dinner and overnight at the lodge.

Day 05 Morning Game Drive and Exploration of Kidepo Valley National Park

The day starts with an early morning game drive across the open savannah plains of Kidepo Valley National Park, one of Africa’s most pristine wilderness areas. The park is home to large herds of buffalo, elephants, giraffes, zebras, and antelopes, as well as predators such as lions and cheetahs. The dramatic backdrop of rugged mountains and wide valleys makes wildlife viewing especially memorable. After returning to the lodge for lunch, the afternoon may include a second game drive, nature walk, or cultural visit to a nearby Karamojong community. Dinner and overnight are at the lodge.

Day 06 Drive from Kidepo Valley National Park to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

After breakfast, you depart Kidepo and begin the drive south toward Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary. This is a full travel day, crossing vast savannah landscapes, small towns, and rural communities in northern Uganda. En route stops are made for meals and short breaks. Arrival at Ziwa is in the evening, where you check in at the lodge near the sanctuary. Dinner and overnight are enjoyed in a peaceful natural setting, preparing for the following day’s rhino experience.

Day 07 Morning Rhino Tracking and Drive Back to Entebbe or Kampala

In the morning, you participate in guided rhino tracking on foot at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary. Accompanied by rangers, you walk through the bush to observe the southern white rhinos at close but safe range while learning about conservation efforts and rhino behavior. After the experience, you return for breakfast and then drive back to Entebbe or Kampala. Arrival is in the late afternoon or evening, marking the end of your 7-day Mount Elgon hiking and Kidepo Valley safari adventure.
