Tour Plan

Day 01 Entebbe to Kasese

The journey begins with a scenic drive from Entebbe to Kasese in western Uganda. The route passes through changing landscapes of rolling hills, tea plantations, crater lakes, and rural countryside, with possible stops for lunch and photography along the way. As you approach the Rwenzori region, the dramatic outline of the “Mountains of the Moon” becomes visible on the horizon. Arrival in Kasese is in the late afternoon or evening, where you check into your lodge for dinner and an overnight stay, allowing time to rest and prepare for the mountain trek ahead.

Day 02 Nyakalengija (1,615 m) to Nyabitaba Hut (2,651 m)

After breakfast, you transfer to Nyakalengija, the starting point of the Rwenzori trek. Following registration and a briefing by guides and porters, the hike begins through farmlands and villages before entering the lush montane forest. The trail gently ascends along the Mubuku River, crossing wooden bridges and passing through dense vegetation rich in birdlife and primates. The terrain can be muddy, especially after rain, but the pace is steady and ideal for acclimatization. After 5–7 hours of trekking, you reach Nyabitaba Hut, perched on a ridge with panoramic views of the forested valley below.

Day 03 Nyabitaba Hut to John Matte Hut (3,505 m)

This day involves a more challenging trek as the trail descends steeply into the Bujuku River valley before climbing again through thick bamboo forest. As altitude increases, the vegetation gradually transitions into giant heather and moss-covered trees, creating a mystical afro-montane atmosphere. Boardwalks assist in crossing swampy sections, though some muddy stretches remain unavoidable. The final ascent to John Matte Hut is gradual but demanding, and the total hiking time ranges between 6 and 8 hours. The hut is located near the river, surrounded by dramatic alpine vegetation.

Day 04 Trek from John Matte Hut to Bujuku Hut (3,962 m)

The trek continues through the iconic Lower and Upper Bigo Bog, one of the most memorable sections of the Rwenzori Mountains. Wooden boardwalks wind through high-altitude wetlands filled with giant lobelias and groundsels. The trail then climbs steadily into open alpine terrain toward Lake Bujuku, set in a stunning glacial valley between Mount Baker and Mount Speke. The air becomes noticeably cooler, and the landscape more rugged. After approximately 5–6 hours of trekking, you arrive at Bujuku Hut, where spectacular mountain views dominate the surroundings.

Day 05 From Bujuku Hut to Kitandara Hut (4,023 m)

This day is both demanding and incredibly scenic. The trail ascends steeply from Bujuku Valley toward Scott Elliot Pass, involving rocky terrain and occasional scrambling. From the pass, hikers are rewarded with sweeping views of glaciers and sharp mountain ridges. The route then descends carefully into the Kitandara Valley, passing alpine lakes and dramatic rock formations. The final approach to Kitandara Hut follows the shores of beautiful Lake Kitandara. Trekking time is typically 6–7 hours, and the night is spent in one of the most scenic locations on the circuit.

Day 06 Kitandara Hut to Guy Yeoman Hut (3,505 m)

After breakfast, the trail climbs toward Freshfield Pass, one of the highest points on the Central Circuit. From here, hikers enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding peaks, valleys, and remaining glaciers. The descent from the pass leads into the remote and rugged Kichuchu Valley, where the trail winds through alpine meadows and rocky sections. Although physically demanding, the scenery makes this day especially rewarding. After 6–7 hours of trekking, you reach Guy Yeoman Hut, situated on a ridge overlooking the valley below.

Day 07 From Guy Yeoman Hut to Nyakalengija

The final trekking day involves a long descent from the high alpine zone back to the trailhead. The route passes through the Kichuchu Valley and gradually re-enters heather, bamboo, and montane forest zones. Oxygen levels increase, temperatures become warmer, and the vegetation grows denser. While the trail can be steep and muddy in places, the sense of accomplishment is strong as you complete the circuit. After approximately 6–8 hours of hiking, you arrive back at Nyakalengija, marking the end of the mountain trek.

Day 08 Drive Back to Kampala

After breakfast, you depart Kasese and begin the return drive to Kampala. The journey once again offers scenic views of Uganda’s countryside, with opportunities for brief stops along the way. Arrival in Kampala is in the late afternoon or evening, bringing the 8-day Mount Rwenzori hiking safari to a close after an unforgettable adventure through one of Africa’s most unique mountain landscapes.
